Eugene Hideaway Bridges

Born in New Orleans, Eugene is a nomadic musician living his life on the road travelling from America through Europe, to Australia with many other stops in between. A towering man with a huge voice, playing an unparalleled brand of blues, oozing enough genuine charm to light up a small city. If you like your blues music laced with soul, funk, gospel and rock, delivered with buckets of class and warmth take a listen to Eugene’s musical catalogue.

In 2000 Eugene signed to Armadillo Music and released his CD, Man Without A Home, which got worldwide airplay. Eugene appeared, often headlining, at major festivals in the USA, all over Europe, Singapore, New Zealand and Australia, whipping up a storm wherever he went with his distinctive southern sound.

The 2003 release, Jump the Joint, reached Number 4 in the US Living Blues Charts, charting for three months. Eugene’s songs also appeared regularly in The National Association of Rhythm & Blues DeeJay charts. He was nominated for three 2003 US Cammy Music Awards.

In September 2004 Eugene recorded his next CD, Coming Home, at The Zone Studio in Dripping Springs, Texas, using a full horn section on several tracks, led by Seth Kibel. Texan guitarist and friend Rocky Athas also joined him on two cuts.

After four CDs recorded with a full band, Eugene’s next self titled release Eugene Hideaway Bridges was recorded in the studio with friends and fellow musicians met on the road. Lucky Oceans co-founder of the Western Swing band Asleep at the Wheel plays Pedal Steel on three tracks and Texan legend Ray Wylie Hubbard lays down some fine Slide Guitar on I Can’t Wait. This CD was nominate for two 2008 US Blues Music Awards.

March 2009 saw Eugene in San Antonio to fulfil his fans wishes for a Live CD. With the line up of Bobby Baranowski on Drums, Eric King Bass, David Webb Keys, Seth Kibel Sax and Justine Miller on Trumpet, you have the real deal. Live in San Antonio was nominated for two 2011 Blues Music Awards in the Soul Blues Album and Soul Blues Artist Categories.

January 2011 Eugene is back in the Zone Studio, Dripping Springs, Texas with Pat Manske as Producer. Pat who has previously produced both of Eugene’s Blues Music Award nominated albums. The Blues Music Awards are universally recognized as the highest accolade afforded to musicians and songwriters within blues music.  Turning fifty in 2013, Eugene wanted to put together an eclectic, retrospective collection of thirteen of his own songs and four covers.

Moving from a traditional song learnt in church as a young child, to songs about his life, travel, lost loves and a treasured 1981 Datsun 720 truck Nelly Bell! Here we have Roots & Vines.

Richard Smith-Beverly

“I am so thankful and thrilled to be releasing my first single this year - it seems like it’s been a long time coming - but I guess like every artist - it takes time to find the right sound.” Richard Smith-Beverly releases a holiday classic “Jingle Bells” with a new spin on iTunes and Amazon November 2015 via digital download. The single showcases a slick pop production reminiscent of a Justin Bieber or Mariah Carey record. The song features doo-wop style background vocals, lush strings, and a horn arrangement that is sure to be a jolly good time for all. “Jingle Bells” was mastered by Grammy-Award Winning mastering engineer Bob Ludwig at Gateway Studios. “I want to pinch myself because I still can’t believe that I am so fortunate enough to have worked with someone of his caliber.” “I really love this single - it makes me want to dance when I hear it - and I hope that it will make everyone around the world want to rock and dance when they hear it too.” The song will be one of five standards featured on the forthcoming LP that will comprise half standards and half originals. Full Christmas Album will be released in November 2015.

“I honestly couldn’t say enough about my teachers who generously gave of their time and expertise; and who have shaped me into the musician I am today - I am eternally grateful for the energy spent, hard work, and investment in me.” Richard received his vocal training from the Baltimore School for the Arts under the tutelage of Joyce Hubbard and Robert Cantrall. He went on to study music composition in Philadelphia under commercial composers Rick Hall and Chuck Butler, the later of which trained him extensively in all genres of commercial production. Richard explored internet collaboration with Russian Sound Composer Roman Olegov which produced the song ”One More Night”; and in 2009 it spawned the album “Earth Elements” - a theme album that featured a Pop/Rock sound. “Collaborating with Roman was an awesome experience - I had the opportunity to explore a Pop/Rock sound and I was able to fuse my vocal arrangement over his production - which had a really cool Euro sound - and it was just fun to collaborate with someone from halfway around the world.” In December of 2011, Richard released a holiday classic featuring a more Pop/R&B sound that received a huge PopScore on the internet radio site Jango and sparked the idea for a full album.

“After realizing how many people loved the single “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” I decided to stick with a Pop/R&B sound for the next song I would record. This year, Richard returns with a new holiday single entitled “Christmas Is Only Christmas With You” that was just recorded in October of this year that will warm your hearts this holiday season. The single is stripped down to the basics and features an amazing jazz piano arrangement, opulent strings, and tells the story of a loved one coming home for Christmas. The single is one of many newly written holiday songs that will be featured on the forthcoming album. The song will be available for digital download between mid November and early December 2015. “I really love this new single, it warms my heart when I listen to it and definitely makes me think of the holidays when I hear it and I hope it will warm everyone’s heart around the world when they hear it too.”

Gundy

An analysis about songplay of Luna Blanca in France showed much more airplay of the song Pirates and Mermaids because of added vocals. So the band produced 2 more songs with Davina-Carolin and Gundy singing together. (Exceptionell: Davin-Carolin sings the lead voice and Gundy the second voice above, Simon and Garfunkel used to sing this way).

One can never tell where great music will spring forth from. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that sometimes the recourse is a musical family. In this case, Davina-Carolin is the daughter of Richard Hecks and his wife Gundy.

Richard Hecks is the leader and lead guitar player of the famous Nouveau Flamenco Band Luna Blanca. This instrumental group was presented the “Best World Album 2012” award at ZMR in New Orleans for the CD El Dorado.

Richard’s wife Gundy was featured on the Goa Chill out Zone Vol. 5 singing her song “Freedom in Your Soul.”

For her first release, Davina-Carolin appeared with a new cover version of the song “Comptine d’Un Autre Été, L'après-Midi – Amélie from Montmartre [Large Version 2010]”. She plays it in a much laid back style giving the music time to connect straight to the heart of the listeners.

Her latest release "Dusk Till Dawn" is a vocal album, singing together with Gundy and having Luna Blanca - Richard Hecks and His Nouveau Flamenco Band - as companion volume.

Steve Wrench

Deep in a poets heart there lies a song.  In Stephen Wrench’s songs you can hear his poet heart.  With the depth of a heart worn romantic and the grainy edge of hard fought intention his music calls to the listener from places far beneath the surface.  Echoing deep, somber shades of melancholy against high timber walls , his music somehow makes us long for loves lost while all the while hopeful of loves to come.  Effortlessly blending his country soul with his rock and roll heart Stephen creates his unique blend of music.
Singing and performing since he was a child, Stephen has spent his entire life creating music.  In addition to performing, Stephens ability to cross genres with ease and style makes him a highly sought after writer and composer. Stephen has worked with many notable artists or members of the following:  Lynyrd Skynyrd, Tommy Tutone, Toto, Loverboy, Survivor, Missing Persons, Ozzie Osbourne, Red Jump Suit Apparatus, Starship, Grand Funk Railroad, John Anderson,  and many others.
Stephen’s love of music, his ability to transcend genre, and his sincere vocal delivery are a unique gift to each performance -  every time.

Layla's 4th of July Message Revisited

Happy 4th of July!!!

Hello Friends!

I know it's been a long time since I've given you an update on my creative endeavors.  At the onset of the new year, I had decided to step down from my band.  Having to leave Mango Dreamers was a very difficult decision and painful for me especially because of all the time and effort I had put into it. But it was a wonderful learning experience and a lot of amazing things came out of it too - I made new friends, I was inspired, and of course, we made amazing music that we were able to share with the world. The experience taught me that when something comes to an end, it doesn't mean that the experience was a waste - far from it. If you think about the blessings from any experience, you will find that there is a lot to be thankful for.

So with all the downtime I had these past several months (no rehearsals, recording sessions or shows), I decided to finish a book I had started a couple of years ago.  It is a fiction novella (less than 100 pages) about a girl who is a law student by day and a cocktail waitress in a casino at night. It's a fun story that I hope teen girls will enjoy.  I'm really excited about it! So excited that I'm already working on my second book!!! :)

As for music, I have just recently started getting back into it.  I had contemplated breaking up with music completely, but like a complicated relationship, we are somehow back together again.  And almost out of nowhere, I won a scholarship to attend the Kauai Music Festival, which is an annual conference for songwriters in Hawaii.  It was a wonderful experience where I collaborated with other songwriters and was inspired every day by the island's natural beauty.  I have written several new songs and plan to record later this year.

So it's been a while since I've seen many of you and my dear friend Katy and I have decided to throw a casual poolside party on Saturday, July 25.  It will be held at the La Meridien Delfina Hotel in Santa Monica from 3pm-8pm.  It will be a bunch of "young professionals" (young is subjective) so come and hang out with us! We can only host up to 150 people, so please register on the link below, and feel free to bring anyone you like!

Have a wonderful weekend!
Layla

Bill McVail's new EP, Garden Leave

Bill McVail's new EP, Garden Leave, takes an honest look at the road to change - complete with both the fears of leaving the comfortable path behind, as well as the joy and power that comes with discovering that new pathways are there for the taking.  It is a collection of songs that were years in the making, with the "garden leave" providing the platform for their eventual expression.  It is a statement that change is not only possible, but it is essential for a full realization of who we are.

After 27 years in the investment business, I decided to get off of the hamster wheel that I had been turning, leaving the sausage factory to take a step back and take stock of who I was, where I was, and where I wanted to go next.  The decision was literally years in the making, but recording this record in my basement was very much here-and-now.  Making this record was a journey of complete honesty, reflecting both the fears and rewards that come with going off-road.  It covers a wide range of musical styles, but the message is the same - it is never too late to change your path in life.

SoulDirection1

SoulDirection1

My Story: Zaricor Jackson Jr.

Hi! My name is Zaricor but most people call me Sonny. I’ve been singing for quite a while. At one time in my life I was about to sign a lucrative contract. But I backed out of it, never fully understanding why but yet satisfied with my decision. Years later I got saved, became a deacon, sang in the choir, then became a preacher and began to work faithfully in outreach ministry to the less fortunate in Watts, California – a city that I had grown up in.

I never thought about singing again professionally. I spent most of my time assisting the Pastor and teaching Sunday School. And I was truly happy. I spent a lot of my time encouraging others in the church as well as in the community. A lot of people enjoyed my singing and encouraged me to sing more on Sundays. And sometimes secretly I would think about how nice it would be to sing again professionally. Then I met a woman and invited her to go and minister with me and some friends. That’s when things started to change.

My Story: Lillie Van Buskirk-Jackson

Hi! My name is Lillie. When I was young my mother and I went to church and I was baptized at the age of 8. During the course of life, my mother passed and church just wasn’t really in my life. Thanks to some wonderful Christians, I rededicated my life to the Lord . I started singing in the choir at church and playing hand bells.

My husband and I sang duets and sometimes trios with his sister at church services. We also had the opportunity to lead worship in several different churches. We were blessed enough to be able to record an album and were looking forward to ministering to small churches across Southern California. Unfortunately the Lord decided it was time for him to go home. I was still interested in continuing to sing, but it seemed so far away. I just continued to stay in church and help lead worship. Then I met a man who invited me to go and minister with some friends. That’s when things started to change.

Our Story:

From the moment we met, it was pure magic. We had an unusual chemistry from the beginning. We started singing together in local churches and the invitations just poured in. We were thankful for that and a little surprised at the same time because our styles were quite a bit different from others on the many programs we were invited to minister. Several years later, that man and woman that met by chance were married.

Little did we know that what we thought was going to be just a singing ministry and singing at different churches would actually be turned into God equipping us for street ministry. So we put aside our music for many years and concentrated on street ministry. We did the street ministry faithfully and it consisted of giving away food and clothing and praying for people's needs in the inner city which we still do. For more details, see our page on street ministry. We finally got a release from God and felt comfortable going back to pursuing our singing ministry which was pushed aside many years ago because of our commitment to the street ministry. We thank God that He has provided us with both ministries to reach out to our community.

We were fortunate enough to meet some influential gospel ministries in Los Angeles that took us under their wing. And we will always be grateful for that. We have been blessed enough to host our own cable program for many years. We also have had the honor for many years of producing and hosting the Gospel Concert for the Watts Summer Festival – which has been an institution for over 45 years. We will always be thankful for the opportunity that was given to us by the late Tommy Jacquette – a towering figure in the community. Then another blessing came in form of a 90 year old lady and community leader, the late Ms. Edna Aliewine and the CEO and founder of the Black Businessman’s Expo – Mr. Harold Hambrick.

We were asked to produce and host the Gospel Concerts for the day of the Watts-Willowbrook Christmas Parade in 2010 which has been in existence over 45 years. We also received training from Ms. Barbara Stanton of Wattstar on communicating with elected officials regarding components of the parade.

We are licensed ministers of WEA (Western Evangelical Association) in good standing.

Our hearts are still with the less fortunate that we find around us. To be perfectly honest we get as much joy from street ministry as we do from music, so we combine the two. For more on that story, go to our Street Ministry page.

Thank you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule to read our story.
